The 2014 Year of the Horse 1 oz silver coin is part of Perth Mint’s popular Lunar Series, and issued by Australia. This coin is part of Series II of the Lunar coins, which were issued between 2008 and 2019. Perth Mint is famous for their beautiful coins, struck to a high quality, and the Lunar coins are exceptionally popular with collectors.

Each coin contains 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams) of 999 fine silver, and has a diameter of 45.6 mm. They are legal tender in Australia with a face value of 1 AUD. There were 300,000 of these Year of the Horse 1 oz silver bullion coins struck in 2014.

The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (head of state of the British Commonwealth) by Ian Rank-Broadley whose initials ‘IRB’ can be seen below the Queen’s neck. The weight of the coin, its purity, year of issue and the 1 DOLLAR face value is also included, alongside the inscription “ELIZABETH II” and “AUSTRALIA”.

The reverse depicts two horses stood by a river, while one drinks. The Chinese character for ‘horse’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Horse’ also appear in the design with the Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. The designer’s initials ‘TV’ for Thomas Vaughan can also be seen.
