This series celebrates the kookaburra, a tree kingfisher native to Australia that has become an iconic part of the country’s wildlife. Each 2012 Australian Kookaburra 1 oz silver coin is 40.6 mm in diameter, and contains one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of 999 fine silver. They are legal tender in Australia, with a face value of 1 AUD. Perth Mint produced 500,000 of the 2012 1 oz Kookaburra coins.

The reverse design of the series changes each year, and the 2012 coins feature a kookaburra perched on a branch, with eucalyptus leaves around it. The inscription “AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA”, “2012 1 oz 999 SILVER”, and the Perth Mint ‘P’ mark can also be found, alongside the initials ‘DB’ for designer Darryl Bellotti.

The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (head of state of the British Commonwealth) by Ian Rank-Broadley whose initials ‘IRB’ can be seen below the Queen’s neck. The coin’s face value of 1 DOLLAR is also included, alongside the inscription “ELIZABETH II” and “AUSTRALIA”.
