The 2016 Year of the Monkey 2 oz silver coloured coin is part of Perth Mint’s popular Lunar Series, and issued by Australia. This coin is part of Series II of the Lunar coins, which were issued between 2008 and 2019. Perth Mint is famous for their beautiful coins, struck to a high quality, and the Lunar coins are exceptionally popular with collectors.

Each coin contains two troy ounces (62.2 grams) of 999 fine silver, and has a diameter of 55.6 mm. They are legal tender in Australia with a face value of 2 AUD. There were 5,250 of colourized Year of the Monkey 2 oz silver bullion coins struck in 2016.

The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (head of state of the British Commonwealth) by Ian Rank-Broadley whose initials ‘IRB’ can be seen below the Queen’s neck. The weight of the coin, its purity, year of issue and the 2 DOLLARS face value is also included, alongside the inscription “ELIZABETH II” and “AUSTRALIA”.

The reverse depicts two monkeys sitting on the branch of a peach tree, with the youngster holding a peach in its hand. The monkey's and fruit have been tastefully coloured to enhance the detail of the design. The Chinese character for ‘monkey’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Monkey’ also appear in the design with the Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. The designer’s initials ‘IJ’ for Ing Ing Jong can also be seen on the branch to the right of the design.
