The 2016 Kangaroo 1/2 oz gold coin is issued by Australia, and produced by Perth Mint. The series celebrates Australia’s most iconic animal, and was originally called the gold Nugget. Australia is famous for its gold production, and discoveries of nuggets, but the series changed to feature the kangaroo in 1990 and has continued to do so since.

All of the 2016 Australian Kangaroo 1/2 oz gold coins contain half of a troy ounce (15.55 grams) of 9999 fine gold, the highest purity used in commercial bullion coins. They are 25.1 mm in diameter, and are legal tender in Australia with a face value of 50 AUD. 23,140 of the 2016 gold Kangaroo 1/2 oz coins were minted.

The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II (head of state of the British Commonwealth) by Ian Rank-Broadley, whose initials ‘IRB’ can be found below the Queen’s neck. The words ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and the coin’s face value of 50 DOLLARS are also shown.

The reverse design of the 2016 Kangaroo gold coins feature a kangaroo standing upright, with a stylised effect marking its silhouette. The words AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO are shown at the top, with 2016 1/2oz 9999 GOLD at the bottom. The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mint mark, and initials ‘IJ’ for designer Ing Ing Jong are also shown.
