Up for bidding is 2 pcs of 7.32 gram British Gold Sovereign Coins – Total 14.64 grams Gold (Various Years)
The Gold Sovereign, minted by Britain’s Royal Mint, is one of the most famous and widely recognised gold coins in the world.
Containing nearly a quarter of a troy ounce of gold, the modern gold Sovereign was first minted over 200 years ago in 1817, and circulated widely as gold coinage during the 19th and 20th centuries in Britain and the British Empire. Since these coins are over 100 years old, their condition varies, and the minting techniques of the time were not as precise as today. As a result, the coins we offer have a tolerance of up to 1% for both weight and purity, which is standard for coins of this era.
According to the original specifications, each gold coin contains 7.32 grams of gold within a total weight of 7.988 grams, with a gold purity of 91.67%. Minor variations in weight and purity are to be expected due to the less advanced production techniques of the past and the wear and tear from these coins having circulated extensively over time. Given their age and usage, such deviations are considered normal. Gold Sovereign coins that fall within a 1% tolerance for purity and up to 0.2 grams for weight are deemed acceptable and will not be exchanged.
As the Sovereign has a long production history, the obverse face of the coins feature a wide array of portraits of British monarchs over time.
The reverse face of nearly all Sovereign designs since 1817 feature a famous depiction of St George slaying a dragon. This imagery was designed by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci.
Sovereigns are legal tender in the UK with a £1 face value, and as legal currency in the UK, are exempt from the UK’s Capital Gains Tax (CGT).
As physical precious metals investments, Gold Sovereigns are affordable, great for gifting and collecting and are recognized and highly liquid the world over in all gold markets.
