The 2016 Kangaroo 1 oz silver coin is issued by Australia, and produced by Perth Mint. The series celebrates Australia’s most iconic animal, and is a popular choice with investors and collectors thanks to Perth Mint’s high quality standards, and use of high-purity silver.

All of the 2016 Australian Kangaroo 1 oz silver coins contain a troy ounce (31.1 grams) of 9999 fine silver, the highest purity used in commercial bullion coins. They are 40.6 mm in diameter, and are legal tender in Australia with a face value of 1 AUD. 11,245,615 of the 2016 silver Kangaroo coins were minted.

The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II (head of state of the British Commonwealth) by Ian Rank-Broadley, whose initials ‘IRB’ can be found below the Queen’s neck. The outer section of the obverse uses a textured background, with the words ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and the coin’s face value of 1 DOLLAR.

Unusually for Perth Mint, the reverse of the silver Kangaroo coin remains relatively unchanged each year. Designed by Stuart Devlin, it shows a Red Kangaroo, mid hop, with a radial sunbeam design behind it. The outer edge uses the same pattern as the obverse, and includes the inscription AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO, 2016, 1 OZ 9999 SILVER. The traditional ‘P’ mintmark for Perth Mint can also be found, while 2016 saw the introduction of a new security feature in the form of a micro-engraved letter A. This can be found in the A of AUSTRALIAN and requires magnification to be seen clearly.
