The 2013 Year of the Snake 1/2 oz silver coin is part of Perth Mint’s popular Lunar Series, and issued by Australia. This coin is part of Series II of the Lunar coins, which were issued between 2008 and 2019. Perth Mint is famous for their beautiful coins, struck to a high quality, and the Lunar coins are exceptionally popular with collectors.

Each coin contains half a troy ounce (15.55 grams) of 999 fine silver, and has a diameter of 35.95 mm. They are legal tender in Australia with a face value of 50 cents. There were 160,616 of these Year of the Snake 1/2 oz silver bullion coins struck in 2013.

The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (head of state of the British Commonwealth) by Ian Rank-Broadley whose initials ‘IRB’ can be seen below the Queen’s neck. The weight of the coin, its purity, year of issue and the 50 CENTS face value is also included, alongside the inscription “ELIZABETH II” and “AUSTRALIA”.

The reverse depicts a snake coiled around a branch. The Chinese character for ‘snake’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Snake’ also appear in the design with the Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. The reverse was designed by Ing Ing Jong.
