The 2012 Year of the Dragon 1/2 oz silver coin is part of Perth Mint’s popular Lunar Series, and issued by Australia. This coin is part of Series II of the Lunar coins, which were issued between 2008 and 2019. Perth Mint is famous for their beautiful coins, struck to a high quality, and the Lunar coins are exceptionally popular with collectors.

Each coin contains half a troy ounce (15.55 grams) of 999 fine silver, and has a diameter of 36.6 mm. They are legal tender in Australia with a face value of 50 cents. There were 389,161 of these Year of the Dragon 1/2 oz silver bullion coins struck in 2012.

The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (head of state of the British Commonwealth) by Ian Rank-Broadley whose initials ‘IRB’ can be seen below the Queen’s neck. The weight of the coin, its purity, year of issue and the 50 CENTS face value is also included, alongside the inscription “ELIZABETH II” and “AUSTRALIA”.

The reverse depicts a stylised Chinese dragon interacting with a Pearl of Wisdom. The Chinese character for ‘dragon’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Dragon’ also appear in the design with the Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.
