The reverse design of the series changes each year, and in 2009 Perth Mint issued a special 20-coin set that included the previous 19 designs alongside this coin. The 2009 coins feature a kookaburra perched on a branch, with stylised sun beams behind it. The inscription “THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA”, “2009”, “1 oz 999 SILVER”, and a special ‘P20’ mark can also be found, alongside the initials ‘DB’ for designer Darryl Bellotti.
The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (head of state of the British Commonwealth) by Ian Rank-Broadley whose initials ‘IRB’ can be seen below the Queen’s neck. The coin’s face value of 1 DOLLAR is also included, alongside the inscription “ELIZABETH II” and “AUSTRALIA”.
