The observe face of the coin features imagery of the Australian Platypus, a unique and unusual mammal which can only be found near freshwater rivers and lakes in Australia.
The obverse face of the coin features a head portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the monarch of Australia, by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, along with the coin’s legal tender face value of AUD$100.
The Platinum Platypus was first minted by the Perth Mint in 2011, and had a limited mintage of 30,000 in that year, all of which sold out.
