The 1987 Panda 1/2 oz gold coin is a bullion product issued by the People’s Republic of China, and produced at the Shanghai Mint (as denoted by the S mint mark). This was the only year gold Pandas carried a mint mark. The Chinese Panda coins are a popular release with collectors due to their changing annual designs featuring the charming Giant Panda.

Each 1987 Chinese Panda 1/2 oz gold coin contains half a troy ounce (15.55 grams) of 999 fine gold. They are legal tender in China with a face value of 50 Yuan, and have a diameter of 27 mm. The obverse of the coin remains the same each year, and features the Tiāntán or Temple of Heaven, located in Beijing. Chinese characters are located at the top of the coin reading “Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo”, translating as “People's Republic of China”. The year of issue is located at the bottom of the coin.
