The 2009 Kangaroo 1 oz gold coin is issued by Australia, and produced by Perth Mint. The series celebrates Australia’s most iconic animal, and was originally called the gold Nugget. Australia is famous for its gold production, and discoveries of nuggets, but the series changed to feature the kangaroo in 1990 and has continued to do so since.

All of the 2009 Australian Kangaroo 1 oz gold coins contain a troy ounce (31.1 grams) of 9999 fine gold, the highest purity used in commercial bullion coins. They are 32.6 mm in diameter, and are legal tender in Australia with a face value of 100 AUD. 298,016 of the 2009 gold Kangaroo 1 oz coins were minted.

The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II (head of state of the British Commonwealth) by Ian Rank-Broadley, whose initials ‘IRB’ can be found below the Queen’s neck. The words ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, the year of issue, and the coin’s face value of 100 DOLLARS are also shown.

The reverse design of the 2009 Kangaroo gold coins feature a kangaroo with her joey in her pouch. The Southern Cross Constellation is shown to the right, and the Federation Star to the left.
