The 2002 Year of the Horse 1 oz gold coin is part of Perth Mint’s popular Lunar Series, and issued by Australia. This coin is part of the Series I of the Lunar coins, which were issued between 1996 and 2007. Perth Mint is famous for their beautiful coins, struck to a high quality, and the Lunar coins are exceptionally popular with collectors.

Each coin contains one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of 9999 fine gold, and has a diameter of 39.34 mm. They are legal tender in Australia with a face value of 100 AUD. There were 30,000 of these Year of the Horse 1 oz gold bullion coins struck in 2002.

The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (head of state of the British Commonwealth) by Ian Rank-Broadley whose initials ‘IRB’ can be seen below the Queen’s neck. The 100 DOLLARS face value is also included, alongside the inscription “ELIZABETH II” and “AUSTRALIA”.

The reverse depicts a horse galloping in the grass, facing front. The Chinese character for ‘horse’, the year of issue, and "1 OZ 9999 GOLD" are also included. The reverse was designed by Travis Farley.
