The 2005 Panda 1/4 oz gold coin is a bullion product issued by the People’s Republic of China, and produced at the Shanghai Mint or Shenyang Mint. The Chinese Panda coins are a popular release with collectors due to their changing annual designs featuring the charming Giant Panda.
Each 2005 Chinese Panda 1/4 oz gold coin contains a quarter of a troy ounce (7.77 grams) of 999 fine gold. They are legal tender in China with a face value of 100 Yuan, and have a diameter of 22 mm. Older editions of the Chinese gold Pandas are generally harder to come by and command a higher collector's premium.
The obverse of the coin remains the same each year, and features the Tiāntán or Temple of Heaven, located in Beijing. Chinese characters are located at the top of the coin reading “Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo”, translating as “People's Republic of China”. The year of issue is located at the bottom of the coin.
The reverse design of the Panda coin series changes each year, and the 2005 coins feature a mother and baby panda, sharing bamboo leaves. The coin’s purity, weight and face value are also shown.
