Product Information:

The Italian 20 Lire gold coin, known to collectors as the "Marengo," is one of the world's classic gold coins. The name recalls the Battle of Marengo of 1800 near Alessandria in Piedmont, first commemorated on gold struck at the Turin mint and later carried over to the 20 Lire of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy, proclaimed in 1861 under Vittorio Emanuele II of the ancient House of Savoy. As a founding member of the Latin Monetary Union in 1865, Italy minted its gold to a common European standard shared with France, Switzerland, and Belgium, allowing the coin to circulate freely across borders as a trusted store of value. Since these coins are over 100 years old, their condition varies, and the minting techniques of the time were not as precise as today. As a result, the coins we offer have a tolerance of up to 1% for both weight and purity, which is standard for coins of this era.

According to the original specifications, each gold coin contains 5.806 grams of gold within a total weight of 6.45 grams, with a gold purity of 90% — the very same Latin Monetary Union standard used for the Swiss and French 20 Francs. Minor variations in weight and purity are to be expected due to the less advanced production techniques of the past and the wear and tear from these coins having circulated extensively over time. Given their age and usage, such deviations are considered normal. Coins falling within this 1% purity and weight tolerance are considered normal and will not be exchanged.

The obverse of this Italian 20 Lire gold coin, long admired for the fine classical engraving of Italy's royal mints, features the bust of the reigning King of the House of Savoy — Vittorio Emanuele II, Umberto I, or Vittorio Emanuele III, depending on the year of issue — encircled by his name and royal title. On the classic issues of Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I, the reverse displays the crowned coat of arms of the House of Savoy, its shield bearing the Cross of Savoy, framed by branches of oak and laurel and often encircled by the Collar of the Order of the Annunciation, with the denomination 'L.20' below alongside the date and mint mark. Coins later struck under Vittorio Emanuele III introduced new designs, most famously the graceful 'Aratrice,' in which a standing figure of Italia guides a plough — an image many consider the loveliest of all Italy's gold coins.
