Our various year Krugerrand 1/4 oz gold coins are issued by South Africa and minted by the Rand Refinery. The gold Krugerrand series was the first to be produced for bullion purposes, and is one of the most widely circulated ranges of gold coins in the world.

Each of these 1/4 oz gold Krugerrand coins is 22 mm in diameter, and struck with 916.7 (22 karat) gold as is traditional for this series of coins. They still contain a quarter of a troy ounce (7.77 grams) of pure gold, with a copper added for a total weight of 8.48 grams. They are legal tender in South Africa, with a face value of 1/4 Krugerrand. The 1/4 oz coins were first issued in 1980 and have continued each year since.

The reverse of the coin features the classic Krugerrand design with South Africa’s national symbol, the Springbok. The year of issue, “1/4 KRUGERRAND” and “FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD” can be found on the coin, alongside the initials CLS for designer Coert Laurens Steynberg.

The obverse of the coin features the portrait of Paul Kruger, former president of the South African Republic (Transvaal), designed by Otto Schultz. The words “SOUTH AFRICA” in Afrikaans and English can also be seen around the outer edge.
