The reverse of the coin features striking imagery of an American bison, with the words 'United States of America' encircled above, and the coin’s official face value '$50' and weight and gold purity '1 oz. .9999 Fine Gold' specified below.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of a Native American designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser adapted from the 1913 Buffalo Nickel coin, with the words ‘LIBERTY’ to the upper right.
